Cost of serious games

As you can probably imagine, asking how much it costs to develop a serious game is kind of like asking how much it costs to develop a video game, or how much it costs to develop a website. The answer depends on far too many variables to be answered without more information.

Clark Aldritch, who has written several books on serious games, estimates some of the costs on his blog:

He estimates that:

  • branching stories can cost between $30,000 and $500,000
  • interactive spreadsheets have similar costs
  • mini games (often built in Flash) can be up to $40,000
  • virtual products can be up to $150,000
  • 'practiceware' (real-time 3D simulations) can be up to $1,000,000

Costs are heavily impacted as motion video, intensive graphics, complex gameplay, and custom development become bigger parts of a serious game.
